CHAPTER ELEVEN

Abigail

Abigail sat still for a long time. She held her breath as she tried to wrap her brain around everything Ned had just told her. She could feel her heartbeat, its soothing rhythmic pulse vibrating inside her chest. Ned’s words echoed in her mind and she latched on to each of them as she tried to get a grip on their meaning. He was right, it was a lot to take in. Her emotions were on high speed now as she sat staring into Ned’s eyes. He was waiting for her reaction, any reaction. She could feel everything around her had slowed. The leaves that had been spinning out of control in the storm that she had felt inside of her had begun to gently float down to the surface.

Since her appearance alongside the river in Washington, she’d wanted answers. Answers to questions that continued to stack up. Answers to help her understand the visions and memories that came to her.

Then she remembered one vision in particular and heard Ned’s words in her mind. Sekmet in her favorite red dress, long fiery red hair as bright as the sun, and light golden hazel eyes.

Abigail narrowed her eyes as she recollected the image of the woman she’d seen in her mirror in Washington.

“I think I’ve seen her. I was getting ready for my meeting with the director in Washington. I had been looking in the mirror, and she appeared to me through my reflection. She wore this long red gown and had the same pendant as mine.” Abigail reached inside her blouse for her pendant and held it in her hand. “I remember thinking how beautiful she was. But her eyes weren’t the golden hazel you described to me. They were so dark and went so deep I felt I could get lost in them. I could feel her anger, but mostly I remember the sadness.” Abigail stared pensively at the pendant. “So much sadness.” She whispered and lifted her eyes to Ned when he placed his hand over hers.

“What you need to understand is that’s not you. Yes, you were created from Sekmet, but you are your own person now. And you are so much stronger now and you were obviously able to control her,” he emphasized. “You are the beloved Hathor. The people loved you. So much so that they threw festivals in your honor.” Ned squeezed her hand in reassurance.

Abigail released a tiny giggle but then her face straightened with concern. “So, what then?” She let her pendant fall against her chest. “This woman, this other part of me, just continues to live inside me, lying dormant until she comes out to take over whenever she wants? What happened? How did it come to this?” She lifted her hands up in exasperation and let them fall to her lap. She watched as Ned removed his field jacket, set it beside him and rolled up his sleeves.

“Well, things were going well for a while. As I said, the people were happy.
